Why Do Lithium Batteries Start Fires?

Lithium-ion batteries are one of today's indispensable energy sources. They are used in a wide range of applications, from smartphones and electric vehicles to solar energy systems and medical devices. However, despite all these advantages, they also pose a serious fire risk in the event of uncontrolled energy release.

So why do lithium batteries cause fires? What is the mechanism that creates this danger? Here are the answers:

⚠️ 1. What is Thermal Runaway?

The most common cause of fires in lithium batteries is a chain reaction called thermal runaway.
In this process, the following happens:

• An internal short circuit occurs in the battery.
• The temperature increases rapidly (between 150°C and 1,000°C).
• This heat also triggers other cells.
• The chemical structure is destroyed and gases are released.
• Result: Fire or explosion.

Because this reaction develops very quickly, by the time it is noticed it is often too late.

🔋 2. Mechanical Damage and External Effects

When lithium batteries are impacted or punctured, it may cause a short circuit in the inner layers.

This increases the risk of thermal runaway.
Example:

• Crushing of boxes during cargo transportation
• Electric vehicle accidents
• Mistakes made during assembly

🌡️ 3. Overcharging or Overheating

Charging batteries above the recommended voltage or operating them for extended periods under high temperatures will invite fire.

• Environments above 60°C are particularly risky.
• Poor quality chargers pose a major threat.
• The internal resistance of the battery increases and it begins to heat up.

⚙️ 4. Manufacturing Defects or Poor Quality

Manufacturing defects such as poor quality cells, missing safety components, and faulty soldering can also lead to fires.

Cheap, uncontrolled batteries are particularly dangerous in this regard.

🔥 5. Why Are Lithium Fires Dangerous?

• It can re-ignite spontaneously.
• Ordinary fire extinguishers do not work.
• It releases dense gas and smoke.
• If intervention is made with water, the danger increases.

✅ Special Solution Against Lithium Fires: Envoy EX

Envoy EX, which we developed as Envoy, is a specially formulated extinguishing solution designed specifically for extinguishing lithium-based fires.

While traditional extinguishers are useless, the Envoy EX:

• It suppresses heat
• Stops the reaction
• Eliminates the risk of re-ignition

Conclusion

Lithium batteries make life easier, but they also pose high risks. Understanding these risks and taking appropriate precautions is crucial for both individual safety and corporate responsibility.

Remember: Ordinary solutions are not enough for lithium fires. Specialized solutions are required.
